Chapter 8

Saturday, February 3

Jack and I stuck to our plan to show up at the snowmobile rental place the following morning at ten, despite the break-in. We weren’t sure who’d done it, but there hadn’t been any evidence of forced entry, so my money was on the desk clerk, who not only had a key but had helped Jack make the dinner reservation, so knew we’d be gone and for about how long. I didn’t know why he would rob us, but no other guests admitted to having seen or heard anything, which indicated to me that whoever entered the room was able to slip in and out without raising suspicion. Luckily, Jack had extra photos of Emily and Slayer in the truck, and for some reason his laptop hadn’t been taken or tampered with.

Jack filled out the required paperwork and paid for a full day’s rental, and I followed him on my snowmobile as he slowly made his way through the dense forest toward Wader’s property. I knew the trip would take about ninety minutes given the speed at which we were traveling, so I let my mind wander. I’d called the resort earlier to check in with whoever was around to answer the landline at the house. As it turned out, it was George I spoke to. He’d popped over to build the fires and help Vikki with the puppy and kids. He’d taken Kizzy out while Clara made pancakes, Vikki had made sure the girls were ready for school, and Brit had seen to the twins. By my calculations, it had taken four adults to see to the needs of four children and a puppy. As a single mom, how was Abby ever going to manage? I supposed single parents across the globe figured it out, but from where I was sitting, the whole thing seemed like a huge undertaking for one woman to handle. Perhaps when this investigation was over, I’d bring up the subject of a full-time nanny for Abby once the baby was born.

After almost an hour, Jack stopped his machine, slipped off his helmet, and turned around. “You doing okay?”

I nodded. I didn’t want to have to take my helmet, complete with face shield, off only to have to put it back on again, so I skipped a verbal reply.

“We should be more than halfway there. Once we see the fencing we were warned about, we’ll stop before we approach the house.”

Again, I nodded.

Jack turned back around, slipped his helmet over his head, and continued slowly.

I was glad Jack was taking his time. For one thing, I wasn’t all that motivated to arrive at our destination, where we might very well be greeted with bullets aimed in our direction, but driving the snowmobile took some getting used to, so I was glad Jack hadn’t decided to travel at a speed I wasn’t comfortable with.

As we rode, I continued to let my mind drift. While surfing the web the previous evening, Jack had learned that Slayer’s body had been found the day after Emily had sent her first selfie to Nicole.
